New York to Dallas by J.D. Robb

I always enjoy getting background information on Eve and Roarke. This book definitely provided the reader with more information about Eve's early years on the NYPSD. It was nice to finally see how she and Feeney hooked up originally.

I missed the interaction between Eve and Peabody, and the NY cast as a whole since this book was primarily set in Dallas. I found it a little hard to believe that the Dallas PD, and the FBI for that matter, would let her take over running the case even though she knew so much about the killer. This is fiction though so I can see how it could happen.

Looking at this book, if I took out the Dallas LT, I could almost see Eve in command of the Dallas squad that she worked with on this case. There was a similar feel to the interaction of the squad as there is in Eve's squad in New York. Some might disagree with me on this, but it's just a thought.

It will be interesting to see where the series goes from here. While there are still gaps in Eve's background and Roarke's background is similar to the Black Hole of Calcutta since he did such a good job at erasing his past, there isn't that much left for these characters to accomplish. While the cases are different, the method through each is pretty much the same. Eve, backed by Roarke, Peabody, Feeney and McNabb, lands a case that she puts everything into as she tries to solve it. In the process, she will work until she is exhausted and she and Roarke will end up having at least one fight. In the end, the case will be solved and they will have made up earlier.

Overall, this was a good book and I enjoyed reading it.

Review - Treachery in Death

Treachery in Death by J.D. Robb

This volume of the In Death series was pretty good. I enjoyed reading it. While the plot wasn't very complicated, this book had a good pace and showed some interesting interaction between the characters.

I thought that Ms. Robb did a good job of building the characters. Peabody is definitely coming into her own as a detective and becoming more confident in her skills. Mira is shown to be capable of making mistakes in judgment, although in this book, several individuals in authority made the same mistake.

She also has me wondering if she has an end in mind for this series, though not any time soon I hope! It seemed to me that Dallas was showing more skill at handling the politics of command in this book. She knew when politics was needed and seemed to be playing the game better than she has in the past. I also noticed that Whitney seems to be asking her more frequently if she has ever though about sitting in his chair in the future.

I had a good time reading this book and can't wait for New York to Dallas to come out later this year.

I did not enjoy this book very much, although I generally love this series. This book just seemed too out there for me to be believable. I hope that the next book, Treachery in Death, is better.

Review - Indulegence in Death

Indulgence in Death (In Death, #31) by J.D. Robb

I really enjoyed this installment of the In Death series. I liked the interaction between Eve and Roarke. It was good to see them get away from New York for pleasure and not because of a case that Eve was working on. It was good to see them building relationships with Roarke's family, especially since Eve doesn't have any family of her own. I thought that it was interesting to have Eve "mentor" the Irish police officer when they discovered the body in the park.

I'm not going to go into the plot once they were back in New York, because that might give the book away. This was fun book to read and I couldn't put it down. I really enjoy watching the characters grow and develop and I think all of them grew in this book. One example of that in the past, especially when the series first started, Eve would never have thought to organize an event to help someone the way she organized the barbecue to help Morris start to socialize again.

Library Loot - April 14 - 20, 2010

I haven't done many of these this year and hope to get back to them over the next month or so.  Hopefully, once I can drive again, I'll start going to the library more  often.

This week, I have one book out, Fantasy in Death by J. D. Robb.  This is the latest in her In Death series.

Eve needs to figure out how a rival of Roarke's in the video-gaming business is killed when he is home alone, in a secured room, playing a new (not on the market yet) video game.

I definitely enjoyed this book more than her last book, Kindred in Death.  Here is my review of Fantasy in Death.

Review - Fantasy in Death

I am happy to say that Fantasy in Death was definitely better than Robb's last book, Kindred in Death.

While I enjoyed Kindred in Death, the interaction between the characters, especially Eve and Roarke, seemed to be getting dull. There wasn't much fire between them for lack of a better word. There was definitely more of that original spark that made them so likable in this book.

The plot for this story was interesting as well.  Death in a holographic game when the person was home alone in a secured apartment.  It was interesting to see how Eve figured this out and how Roarke and the EDD team were able to "prove" her concept although they had a difficult time buying it at first.

Peabody is continuing to grow.  She's starting to think more like Eve now, though she still has a way to go until she can "see" the crime the way that Eve down.

I give Fantasy in Death 4 stars and would recommend it to others.

Library Loot - December 28, 2009

This is my first contribution to the Library Loot event.  I found this while reading a blog post on Devouter of Books.  I wish that I had known about this months ago!  I've been checking books out of the library like crazy since March.  I look forward to making more contributions in the future.

The book that I currently have checked out of the library is Kindred in Death by J.D. Robb.  I started reading this series in March and liked it so much that as one book would come in at the library, I'd request the next one.

I enjoyed this book and can't wait to see the next one.  It's been fun watching Eve developed through the series.  She has definitely grown and become more "accessible" since the first book.  In the beginning of the series, she never would have invited Louise to stay at the mansion the night before her wedding and to include the rest of the bridesmaids in the invitation.

The plot of this book was interesting.  In some places, it was a bit predictable.  I missed having all of the main characters as involved as they have been in past stories.  I think that Peabody's character has grown a lot, but that she still has a way to go and I missed seeing that in this book. 

I love Roarke!  He is one of my favorite characters in this series.  However, I feel that he is becoming too much a part of the EDD team and is losing some of what made him so lovable in the first place, his walking the line between legal and illegal and being just this side of legal.  I wish that he would go back to some of those things, or be less accessible to Eve because of work.  In some ways, I think that she is starting to take him and his abilities for granted.  Just my two cents on her dependency of him.  I really like them as a couple and think that they are excellent complements for each other. 

I would recommend this book to other readers.
