Review: The Case of the Displaced Detective: At Speed

The Case of the Displaced Detective: At Speed
The Case of the Displaced Detective: At Speed by Stephanie Osborn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I couldn't wait to start reading this book. It picks up where "The Case of the Displaced Detectives: The Arrival" ends.

Holmes and Skye are hunting for the members of a spy ring that is out to sabotage Project: Tesseract, which Skye is the lead scientist for and the technology that brought Sherlock Holmes to our universe from another universe or continuum as it is called in the book. "The Case of the Displaced Detectives: The Arrival" ends with Skye getting shot by one of the spy ring as she and Holmes try to apprehend him before he can end The Chamber. "The Case of the Displaced Detectives: At Speed" picks up right where "The Arrival" ended.

Now, Holmes and Skye must investigate the attempted sabotage and try to find out who is behind everything while Skye recovers from the shooting. They spend a lot of time on Skye's ranch and later in a secure location provided by MI-5.

This is another fast paced story as Holmes and Skye work together to solve the case as well as growing closer to each other. They also stumble around each other as Holmes accustoms himself to twenty first century society and Skye confronts her issues from her past.

I enjoyed this book and am off to see if the library has the next book in the series.

Review: The Case of the Displaced Detective: The Arrival

The Case of the Displaced Detective: The Arrival
The Case of the Displaced Detective: The Arrival by Stephanie Osborn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The characters and the story line were well written and believable. Stephanie Osborn did a very good job of bringing Sherlock Holmes into the twenty first century using an interesting concept of science.

Dr. Skye Chadwick is a contract scientist working on a top secret military project, Project: Tesseract, of viewing and interacting with alternate realities, which they call continuums. She and her team have focused on following Sherlock Holmes, whom they have discovered is a real person in the other continuums, as they test a tesseract machine that allows them to see the continuums. As they are completing their final tests, she inadvertently changes the timeline of Continuum 114 when she saves Sherlock Holmes from falling over Reichenbach Falls with Prof. Moriarty and accidentally sending him into our reality or universe.

Holmes is unable to go back to his continumm without causing damage to the continuum. He must find a way to adapt to the twenty first century quickly. Dr. Chadwick is assigned to be his liaison with our world during his adjustment. As they work to get Holmes adjusted in our universe, they also must work together to find out who is out to sabotage Project: Tesseract before they succeed.

As the story evolves, Dr. Chadwick evolves into the modern version of Holmes' best friend Watson. She has a great deal of emotional baggage though that she and Holmes need to work through and around.

The book does end on a cliffhanger which would have driven me crazy if I had had to wait for the next book to be released. Luckily for me, it is already been published.

Overall, this was an excellent book that I was unable to put down.

We are lucky to live in Michigan where lakes are plentiful as well as beautiful. I taught elementary school for over 35 years. Reading books is such a joy for children. Review: Crumbs aren't Enough

    Crumbs aren't Enough
Crumbs aren't Enough by Raquel Whiting Gilmer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"Crumbs Aren't Enough" was a fun quick read. Charlie is an intelligent young woman with a good job doing what she wants and good friends. The only problem that she has with her life is that she hasn't "found the right one" yet. As the story evolves, the reader follows Charlie's journey as she tries to figure out what is wrong with her that she can't find the right guy. She comes to eventually realize that the problem is that she has low self-esteem and that until she places a greater value on herself than she is currently doing, she will always "settle".

It was interesting to see her grow up and to realize that she doesn't have to settle for crumbs.

Cover Reveal: "Romancing the Million $$$ Ghost"

Today, I am hosting the cover reveal for "Romancing the Million $$$ Ghost".  I can't wait to read this book!

    About the Book:

Eccentric tobacco tycoon Rodger Hawthorne III can have anything his heart desires except his dead wife, Sarah.  Feeling responsible for the car crash that killed her twenty years earlier, he offers one million dollars to anyone who can find her spirit and bring it to him within one week or the money is forfeited.  Six spiritually-challenged—but highly intuitive—women find his ad over the Internet and accept his challenge only to embark on a journey they didn’t quite expect that covers astral traveling, past life regressions and spiritual encounters of the unworldly kind.  While this book is lightly based on a true story of a real man who is offering one million dollars to anyone who can prove that spirits exist, this story is purely fictional.  Or is it?
    Coming October 2013!

Crumbs Aren't EnoughABOUT CRUMBS AREN'T ENOUGH

With $80,000 in student debt, an alter ego named Crazy Charlie, and more than her fair share of hang-ups, Charlie Bennett is on a mission: a mission to feel better about herself.

By all accounts this shouldn't be too difficult. After all, Charlie has graduated from the best universities, has good friends to keep her sane, and an impressive resume to boot. But her poor choices in men (and therapists) have left Charlie feeling fat, fretful, and fed up. She knows something has to change--she's just not sure what.

When the elevator doors open and Jack Hudson appears with his perfect smile and perfect teeth, Charlie thinks she's found her answer. A Taye Diggs lookalike who sees through Charlie's imperfections, Jack could be The One--and not just because he can make strawberry shortcake from scratch. But as their relationship develops without any sign of a commitment, Charlie is left grabbing for crumbs yet again.

Raquel Whiting GilmerABOUT RAQUEL WHITING GILMER

Hi, my name is Raquel Whiting Gilmer and I am a wife, daughter, aspiring mother (I don’t have any kids yet but I want them.), sister, friend, small group leader, lawyer, entrepreneur, confidant, advisor, blogger, twitter attempter, soon to be published author, and accepter of crumbs. Well, a recovering crumbs accepter. What’s a crumb accepter? Is it as bad as it sounds? It’s bad, but it’s preventable and curable.

Freedictionary.com defines a crumb as a small fragment, scrap, or portion. And it defines accepter as one who accepts. So a crumbs accepter is one who accepts small scraps. No bueno, right? How did I get like this? Well, I think my low self-esteem was the root cause of it. And I’ve learned that when your self-esteem is bad then you will accept anything including crumbs in all areas of your life. BTW, my biggest crumbs area was definitely my relationships with men.

Things are different now and I have committed myself to Live Crumbs Free. Live crumbs free? Yes, I am committed to not accepting crumbs in any area of my life. But to get to this point, I had to do some work. I first had to work on my self-esteem. And after lots of therapy I got to a place where not only did I have high self-esteem but I started a website, www.perfectlyme.com, and a girls’ program, Perfectly Me Girls to encourage other women and girls to embrace and love who they are and not judge themselves by the world’s standards. Our motto is I’m not perfect, I’m just Perfectly Me.

Once my self-esteem was on the rise, I could start to look at the crumbs in my life. And I knew I had to deal with my personal crumbs and I’m happy to report that after many failed relationships and mounds of crumbs, I met the love of my life and married him. Yay!!! I have the full meal and then some now and it has changed my life. I want everyone to have that full meal and I know how bad the crumbs are so I’ve written my first novel about a woman struggling with relationships who finally figures out that Crumbs Aren’t Enough. I hope you will read my blog at www.raquelwhiting.com, check out my novel, and follow me on twitter, @perfectlyraquel, as I dole out advice and wisdom (my limited wisdom) on keeping your self-esteem high and getting rid of the crumbs.

    Tara's CrossABOUT TARA'S CROSS

Rescuers pulled George Bachmann, a New York City firefighter from Ten House, from beneath the rubble of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. He survived the terrorist attacks, but somehow, his memory had been temporarily left behind. As Bachmann recuperated, he knew he needed to remember what had happened and he needed to confront his dreams, which was not an easy task. His mind was privy to an unknown piece of history that drove him to the brink. In this memoir, Tara’s Cross, Bachmann describes the unimaginable events at Ground Zero. He tells not only of his physical recovery, but also shares the return of his memory through a series of dreams. He reveals the details of the magnificent sighting on West Street where he witnessed the two highest ranking NYC officers saluting each other at the foot of the North Tower before they perished on 9/11. A tale of survival and salvation, Tara’s Cross is a testament to how the mind and soul heal themselves and how the spirits of the honored dead guide them home. This love story, set against the backdrop of the attacks on the World Trade Center, is also one of courage and recovery.
