Review: The Case of the Displaced Detective: The Arrival

The Case of the Displaced Detective: The Arrival
The Case of the Displaced Detective: The Arrival by Stephanie Osborn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I truly enjoyed reading this book. The characters and the story line were well written and believable. Stephanie Osborn did a very good job of bringing Sherlock Holmes into the twenty first century using an interesting concept of science.

Dr. Skye Chadwick is a contract scientist working on a top secret military project, Project: Tesseract, of viewing and interacting with alternate realities, which they call continuums. She and her team have focused on following Sherlock Holmes, whom they have discovered is a real person in the other continuums, as they test a tesseract machine that allows them to see the continuums. As they are completing their final tests, she inadvertently changes the timeline of Continuum 114 when she saves Sherlock Holmes from falling over Reichenbach Falls with Prof. Moriarty and accidentally sending him into our reality or universe.

Holmes is unable to go back to his continumm without causing damage to the continuum. He must find a way to adapt to the twenty first century quickly. Dr. Chadwick is assigned to be his liaison with our world during his adjustment. As they work to get Holmes adjusted in our universe, they also must work together to find out who is out to sabotage Project: Tesseract before they succeed.

As the story evolves, Dr. Chadwick evolves into the modern version of Holmes' best friend Watson. She has a great deal of emotional baggage though that she and Holmes need to work through and around.

The book does end on a cliffhanger which would have driven me crazy if I had had to wait for the next book to be released. Luckily for me, it is already been published.

Overall, this was an excellent book that I was unable to put down.
